Recently in Nairobi, Kenya a large amount of the population has been migrating towards the few larger cities, in hopes of improving upon their quality of life. Most however, end up in the slums of the cities, surrounded by dirt and disease. An Italian organization called Cooperazione Internazionale (COOPI) has developed a new program (farm-in-a-bag) to assist these impoverished communities in sustaining their populations. They began by supplying groups of people with forty seedings, that were capable, when tended to correctly, to sustain a large group of people. While developing this program, the organizers chose seedlings that used minimal space, while producing a maximum output. They educated participants in agricultural techniques as well as proper water management in hopes of revitalizing a dismal situation. Their hopes were to educate a region enough for them to begin to flourish on their own with a kickstart provided by farm-in-a-bag. By: Becca Sage
