On the first day of President Obama's 47-nation Nuclear Security Summit, Ukraine announced a move that will prevent nuclear capabilities from getting into the hands of terrorist groups. Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich has stated that he will lead his country in the removal of their highly enriched uranium over the next two years. Highly enriched uranium is a key ingredient in the creation of nuclear weapons, and according to White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, the Ukraine is in possession of enough uranium to construct several nuclear weapons. It has not been finalized as to where the uranium will be moved to, but Yanukovich already indicated that it may go to Russia. A statement coming from the White House said that President Obama, "praised Ukraine's decision as a historic step and a reaffirmation of Ukraine's leadership in nuclear security and nonproliferation." As the summit continues in Washington this week, many are expecting similar announcements from other countries possessing this tool.
