Vietnamese fishermen, at least twelve, have been arrested by the Chinese government's fishing patrol for intruding on Chinese waters. The fishermen took shelter on a island before a monsoon hit, and this was the problem. Both China and Vietnam have claimed that the island, located near the largest island in the area, belong to their country. The only notice that the fishermen families received was a phone call asking their family to pay fines of almost $10,000. This is not the first time that China "arrested" fishing vessels from Vietnam. 30 ships with more than 200 fishermen have been accused of trespassing on Chinese waters despite the fact that dispute has been going on not only between China and Vietnam, but Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. The government of Vietnam is trying to keep tensions low since the country values China as their ally but the Vietnamese people having growing antisemitism towards China.
