( The Katyn massacre, also known as the Katyn Forest massacre was a mass murder of thousands of Polish prisoners of war, intellectuals, policemen, and other public servants by the Soviet NKVD, based on a proposal from Lavrentiy Beria to execute all members of the Polish Officer Corps ) Russian officials say that the pilots ignored the warning that they were approaching Smolensk too low, despite the foggy weather. Some experts suggested that the plane crash of the Polish president’s Soviet-era Tupolev 154 was due to the mechanical failure but investigators from the Russian emergencies ministry denied it after examining through wreckage of the plane. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin attended a memorial service for the victims at the crash site. Since there are a lot of rumors that the plane crash was not only an accident, Putin said he would personally administer the investigation into the disaster. He promised to grieving people that he will try to find out what happened as soon as possible.
