Plastic Soup - What Will We Do About It?

"We found the great Atlantic garbage patch," said Anna Cummins, who collected plastic samples on a sailing voyage in February.

Out in the Pacific Ocean there are two large patches called the Plastic Vortex or the Plastic Soup and it is a large vortex of garbage being held together by currents. It goes about 30ft deep and a bit bigger than the size of Texas. However, the article (link below) states that just recently, scientists have found another one of these trash patches in the Atlantic. A major goal of environmentalists and scientists are to get more people aware of these monstrocities so that they can be cleaned up. Besides it polluting the water, the garbage hurts sea life - many thinking it to be food and then end up choking and dying on a bottle cap or a barbie head. "Whatever the difference between the two regions, plastics are devastating the environment across the world, said Moore"

"That plastic has the potential to impact our resources and impact our economy," said Lisa DiPinto, acting director of NOAA's marine debris program. "It's great to raise awareness so the public can see the plastics we use can eventually land in the ocean." The US is starting to become very worried about these garbage patches affects on their national interests because of the affects it could have on the ships, marine life, etc. so it is putting in more efforts to help clean this garbage up.
