AL JAZEERA: Kual Deng Majok, a top Dinka leader, was killed by members of the Arab Misseriya tribe in the disputed territory of Abiyei. Both Sudan and South Sudan claim territory in the Abiyei border region. UN peacekeepers and the Sudanese delegation had just attended a meeting about Abiyei when armed Misseriya members attacked. There was a five hour stand off ending in a firefight which the UN is calling an isolated incident. Post-incident, the African Union called on Sudan and South Sudan "to ensure the situation does not spiral out of control".
In March, both countries agreed to resume cross border oil
flows which have been a point of contention since the 2011 split.
However, they were unable to decide the fate of Abiyei which both ethnic groups (Dinka and Misseriya)
call home. Abiyei is disputed because of its fertile land and oil
reserves.
