Pope Francis Proclaims the Largest Number of Saints
Pope Francis has appointed the largest number of saints ever declared in history of the papacy. Among them were 800 Italians who were beheaded in 1480 by Ottoman soldiers for refusing to convert to Islam. In addition, two nuns from South America, Mother Laura Montoya from Columbia has been beautified for her good deeds towards indigenous people and Mother Lupita from Mexico has been been sanctified for the shelter she provided for Catholics when the government was trying to repress their faith.
