Sadiq Zaman Khattak, a candidate running for Pakistan’s
national assembly, was shot dead on Friday in Karachi. His three-year-old son
was also killed. Gunmen on a motorbike opened fire as Khattak left a mosque.
Tehreek-e-Taliban, Pakistan’s Taliban faction is assuming responsibility for
the murderers. Khattak was a candidate for the Awami National Party (ANP), the
leading secular party in Pakistan’s ethnic Pashtun northwest. Since April 11,
62 people have been killed by the Taliban because of the upcoming elections. A
senior party leader has received threats, however, all parties have agreed that
the elections will take place, no matter the threats.
