Transsexual earns right to wed in Hong Kong

A transsexual woman has earned the right to marry her boyfriend in Hong Kong. The woman, identified as W, had appealed her case via the Court of Final Appeal following an initial rejection by the courts to marry in the region. The initial rejection had been based upon her unchanged birth certificate still citing her as a male although she had undergone gender reassignment surgery two years prior. The Court deemed the denial of marriage to transsexuals unconstitutional as procreation is no longer a central tenet of marriage in the many faiths of Hong Kong. The judgement will not be implemented until the following year to allow the government time to amend the decision due to opposition to the change.
