Naida Hosan, a Sargent 1st class in the United States Army, has faced harassment from fellow American soldiers due to the way her name sounds. She says that because her name sounds "Muslim," she has been harassed by other soldiers, as well as accused of being a "Muslim sympathizer" and "too loyal to Muslims." She took her complaints about the way she was treated to her superiors, who did nothing to help her. Hosan even changed her name to "Naida Christian Nova" in hopes of avoiding further harassment but that did not help either.
This kind of treatment directed at an American soldier due to the nature of her name could potentially provoke conflict between US soldiers and the Muslims living in countries where these soldiers are stationed. Their use of "hajji" (the term used for a Muslim who has completed a pilgrimage to Mecca) as a derogatory term both toward Hosan as well as enemies and terrorists could lead to problems between these US Army soldiers and Muslim civilians.
