Extradition-El Chapo

With El Chapo's historic capture last week, the question then becomes what will happen to him now. In 2001, El Chapo escaped from a 20 year sentence in Mexico in a laundry bin. It definitely seems like something out of a movie. It's almost incredible to believe what lengths and methods kingpins like him will do. Tunnels, secret doors, hidden levers, smoke and mirrors become their tools to help them elude the authorities. However, it isn't just these things that has helped El Chapo and those like him keep themselves out of a prison cell. The truth is that many times the location of these drug chiefs are known, but no action is taken. Corruption at a local, regional and even national level allows them to continue operating. In addition, fear is used as a secondary and sometimes latent tactic that also aids them. With this in mind, it is important to consider what El Chapo's position means and how his prosecution must be handled. Even though, American prosecutors have already filed for his extradition, he still has pending time to serve in Mexico and will still charge him with more crimes. Extraditing him to the United States will definitely make Mexico look as though it cannot handle a proper trial process and imprisonment, however, due to it's history, it is plausible to consider the possibility of another escape from el chapo, a loophole discharge through corrupt officials, or even more violence in trying to deal with him. In fact, many protests have sprung up throughout the country demanding his release. To many people, his is the source of protection and center point of community. Therefore, it is difficult to turn this case over to the U.S. when so many feel it is a national affair. Hopefully, relations between the U.S. and Mexico will allow them to figure out a fair process in El Chapo's detainment.
