Russia G8 status at risk

This article talks about the warning that the Secretary of State has issued regarding the possible expel of Russia from the G8. The G8 summit is an annual meeting between leaders from eight of the most powerful countries in the world. The aim is to try to tackle global problems by discussing big issues and planning what action to take. The leaders of the countries meet every year in a different member country. This year the meeting was planned to be held in Sochi in Russia. The leaders of G8 countries has already cancelled their attendance to this meeting as a sign of protests toward the Moscow invasion in the Crimean Peninsula in Ukraine.

United Kingdom, France and Germany have already stated that they will support the initiatives of the United States for economic and financial sanctions toward the Russia.  This problem seems to have intrigued even Australia, a country which doesn't very often mix itself with Euro-Atlantic Politics.  The Russian Ambassador has already been called by Australian Foreign Minister to report more about the Russian position toward Ukraine but also to condemn their actual actions. Australian Foreign Minister have responded “First things, first” in the question whether they are considering to expel the Russian Ambassador from Australia.

While International Monetary Fund, European Union and Barack Obama are working together to create a monetary package as an aid to Ukraine, Russian assets might be frozen and different loans or investments from International Business might be cancelled. John Kerry in a conference stated that all options are being considered but that the Military Intervention is not on the “menu” of options for the White House.

It must be noted that this dramatic action toward the Russian actions comes also as a result of a previous invasion that they did in South Ossetia and Abkhazia, both parts of Georgia legally but de-facto Russian protectorates while governed by unilaterally recognized institutions. Moreover, Russia has been issuing passports and other documents to these regions but just recently after the escalation, Russia has also started to issue documents and passports to the supporters of Yanukovych.
