US concedes Russia has control of Crimea and seeks to contain Putin

With the invasion of Crimea by 6,000 airborne and ground Russian troops, the United States has conceded that Moscow has complete operational control of the Crimean peninsula. U.S senior officials have been dismissing critics that the United States has no power to exert influence over Putin, however the invasion of the peninsula makes this hard to believe. President Obama called for Russia's withdrawal and has turned to economic and political threats. Along with John Kerry and other officials, Obama has spent the last 24 hours trying to get together the international coalition of countries to impose economic sanctions upon Russia. He also has been working with the European Union and International Monetary Fund to fast-track financial aid packages to Ukraine to keep their economy going.

Obama had discussed Russia's possible intervention with Putin on Friday, however he was obviously unable to dissuade the President to shy away from an invasion.
