In a February 13, 2014 article at Reuters.com entitled, U.S.
Admiral Assures Philippines Of Help in Disputed Sea, United States Admiral Jonathan Greenert told students of the
National Defense College of the Philippines: “Of course, we would help you.” A
very clear answer was given in response to a question about possible Chinese
aggression in regards to the Spratly Islands.
There has never been such a blunt answer regarding U.S. aid to the
Philippines if the dispute with China grows violent.
China has warned the United States not to get involved with
the dispute over the Spratly Islands. This is a problem for all involved
parties because China also refuses to participate in arbitration in the
U.N. The United States reportedly
opposes Chinese aggression and would work with allies to maintain freedom of
navigation. Amongst the Spratly islands lay a trade route that transfers over 4
trillion dollars annually.
Since the United States and the Philippines have reentered
discussions regarding a renewed American military presence, stability in the
region could be in sight. Perhaps if there is another major player in the
region, China will attend arbitration.
