Despite the Communist insistence on hemogeny, alternate currents still run deep amongst the minority groups being marginalized by the Han-based economic movement that is carrying China's ethnically homogenous Han population overflow out to the countryside- along with the infrastructures and Communist party leadership to help them prosper, whether the locals want it or not. This week's attack in a Kunming train station left 29 confirmed dead and almost 150 wounded. Links to a Uighur cultural resistance group (Muslim settlers of Xinjiang province), which makes sense in that for ten men to come all the way from the Taklamakan and do all that damage, it's clearly a deep grudge that could be consistent with a tenet as near and dear to people as their faith- but this article doesn't provide more than speculation that Muslims were involved in the incident, so there's a possible undertone of foul play.

It will be interesting to see how China responds to possible dissidence so closely timed with an important Communist conference, and what direction religious freedoms in China will take as a result.
