When Hilary Clinton was the Secretary of State, a policy was initiated allowing visas to be granted to unmarried LGBTQ couples. The State Department has now reversed this policy. This policy specifically impact foreign diplomats and their partners. It prevents unmarried members of the LGBTQ community to come to the U.S. together. Although the diplomat may be given he visa, the partner will be denied this right if they are not legally married. The U.S. government has said that they will be open to working with countries where gay marriage is illegal under the condition that U.S. diplomats will be allowed visas. Throughout the past couple years of the Trump administration, the U.S. has seen several backward shifts in policy and in our culture. This policy, although it does not direct U.S. citizens directly, says a lot about our countries standing. In my opinion, the U.S. should be the country taking the first large steps in the world toward more equality and freedom. This policy goes against that and what many individuals have been fighting for in the past 50 plus years.
