Cubans march against homophobia in Havana

Socialism demonstrated that it has progressive minds at its best today in Havana where hundreds of Cubans took the streets to protest against homophobia. The march was led by the daughter of Cuban President Raul Castro - Mariela Castro - who is currently the head of Cuba's National Sexual Education Center as well. Many were carrying rainbow banners (the symbol of LGBT) and chanting probably one of the most interesting slogans: "Homophobia, no! Socialism, yes!" One of the marchers told the Associated Press that he was happy to see Cuba has made great progress over the past few years. Ms Castro showed concrete optimism and determination but also acknowledged that there is a mountain of prejudice that Cuba has to overcome. Her uncle and former president of Cuba, Fidel Castro, has claimed responsibility for persecution of homosexuals after the 1959 revolution. In the past, gay men and lesbians in Cuba were fired, imprisoned or sent to "re-education" camps.

If Cuba successfully takes this progressive movement, it will be the third country in Latin America to legalize gay marriage, after Uruguay and Argentina.
