Friday, May 10th, Efrain Rios Montt, former Guatemalan dictator during the civil war in Guatemala was found guilty of genocide and sent to jail for 80 years total (50 years for genocide, 30 years for crime against humanity). This was the first time that a leader has been found guilty for genocide in their own country. During his rule in the 1980s, during the 36-year civil war, he turned his head to rape, torture, and killings of thousands of his own people (250,000 people). He has never confirmed knowing about the genocide although the judge who presided over the case believed otherwise. This is a large step to those families who still have not had complete closure from the genocide that took their ancestors years ago.
