In just a few days President Park Geun-hye will be visiting Washington to reaffirm the alliance between the U.S. and South Korea, but she will also come asking about nuclear technology. Back in 1974 the two countries made an agreement that commercial nuclear trade would exist, but these materials could not be used to make nuclear weapons. Now, South Korea wants this ban to be lifted but the U.S. is not willing to do so. The rationale is that if the U.S. changes it's stance towards South Korea other countries will want to enter into a similar agreement which undermines the goal of nonproliferation. For the time being the two countries have agreed to continue with the current agreement for the next two years with periodic meetings during that time.
