Rober Mugabe "donkey" jibe
In Zimbabwe a man has called Robert Mugabe a “limping Donkey, who should be put out to pasture" at an election rally, and was jailed as a result.
Zimbabwe authorities have ignored the court ruling to release the activist
accused. A Lawyer Charles Kwaramba said that prosecutors have invoked a controversial
law to keep Solomon Madzore in detention. Mr. Madzore has denied insulting Mr.
Mugabe and his MDC party is challenging ZANU-PF in elections later this year.
These elections will end the coalition of the two parties that was formed in
2008 after violence and alleged vote-rigging. Robert Mugabe has been in power
since 1980 and will be challenged by Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of Movement of Democratic
Change (MDC) in the upcoming elections. Zimbabwean police also arrested the Zimbabwe
Independent newspaper editor Dumisani
Muleya and his reporter, Owen Gagare, for publishing the article and charged them with publishing falsehoods and
information harmful to the state.
Mr. Mugabe said that no one is “above the law and immune
from criticism”. Mr. Kwaramba believes that the charges are “politically
motivated and fabricated”. According to Zimbabwean law, a persom may be fine
$100, or be jailed up to a year for insulting the president. Morgan Tsvangirai,
leader of MDC said he would get tid of the law should he win the elections this
year but most military chiefs who faught
with Robert Mugabe in 1970 for their independence are “publicly hostile” to Mr
Tsvangirai and accuse him of being Britains puppet.
