Fingerprint Scanners at Venezuelan Supermarkets

Sunday March 8, 2015

President Maduro's latest idea to solve food and basic goods shortages in Venezuela is to impose a system of food rationing through fingerprint scanners in supermarkets. This measure has been the response to food hoarding and panic buying caused by these shortages. Venezuela's declining economy has caused several food shortages in Venezuela and now people try to stack up as much food as possible when it's available. However, President Maduro blames owners of chains of supermarkets and drugstores for the food shortages by claiming that they manipulate the supply and prices. The constant lack of staple foods and medicines has increased the discontent of the people towards the government, which constantly has had to secure power through violence.
