Thousands of people stormed a jail to attack a rape suspect
in India
on Friday. After the suspect was found, the angry mob then beat him to death.
The suspect was described as an illegal immigrant from Bangladesh , and
was 35-years-old. He was accused of raping a local woman last month, and this
has created growing tensions between the native Nagas and Bangladeshi migrants
in the area. Many protesters now are pleading for cancellation of trade permits
for Bangali-speaking settlers. Police tried to use teargas and bamboo canes to
save the suspect, but it did not work. Since there were many students in
uniform, the police used minimum force against the mob. The mob planned a
public hanging after getting the suspect, but he would die from his injuries
instead. His body would be retrieved before it could be hung. The Dimapur town
has been placed under a curfew and the situation is still very heated.
