The United States Air Force is planning on strapping a new navigation system onto stars in space. The United States is concerned that enemies are going to break into the GPS systems that is currently in place. The GPS systems allow for many things to happen everyday, including guiding airplanes and GPS systems on phones and in cars. The GPS systems also allow for bombs to be sent to their correct locations. The GPS system is made up of around 24 different constellations. China has performed tests that have the potential to destroy the satellites, causing the United States government to become very worried, and rightfully so. The Air Force is looking to go back to navigation systems that were made in the 16th century to help sailors find their way around the world using stars. The intent of the new navigation system is "to reduce the technical risk to future weapon systems by demonstrating an integrated navigation solution that can later be tailored to a specific weapon platform."
The United States definitely needs to have a backup system in place in case the GPS system does get destroyed by other countries around the world. Without the GPS system, planes would not be able to fly and cell phones would have trouble functioning. However, if the current GPS system has the capability to be destroyed by other countries, the new system could be harmed too. Other countries do not want the United States to have the capability that they currently have. With the harming of GPS systems, the United States is not as technologically strong.
