Detention of Catalonia's Former Ministers (Genesis Thomas)

After Catalonia's former government was dissolved, Rajoy followed through on his promise that legal action would be taken. Spain's highest court, Audiencia Nacional, summoned Puigdemont and his thirteen ex-ministers. Only nine of Puigdemont's ex-ministers would appear in court and eight of the nine would be held without bail on charges of rebellion, sedition, and misuse of public funds. Jaume Alonso Cuevillas, the lawyer for many of the ex-ministers, argues that the ministers' detention was "politically motivated" and "disproportionate." Puigdemont, who is currently in Belgium, still considers himself Catalonia's leader and denies allegations that he is running from charges. Puigdemont claims that the charges brought against him and his former ministers have no legal basis and are meant to punish their ideas of independence. He believes that the trial is solely political and is an attack on democracy itself. He hopes that the situation dividing Spain will be solved diplomatically and with the acknowledgment of  Catalonia's independence. To read the article click here
