An Indigenous Australian man has taken the Australian government to court arguing that Indigenous people should have earlier access to their pensions. He has stated that the Indigenous life expectancy is years shorter than Australians. Dennis Fisher is 64 years old and he said that he is doing this purely for the benefit of other Indigenous Australians. The case was filed in a Federal court in Melbourne. According to Fisher's lawyer, it will be argued that until the gap in life expectancy is closed, Indigenous people should have earlier access to their pensions. Indigenous women have a life expectancy of 75 years, and men 71 years. Australian men live an average of 8.6 years longer, and women 7.8 years. On top of that, Australia is raising its current age by 6 months in July 2023. In July 2019 the age was raised by a year. The case has yet to be closed.
