Violence at the Turi prison started early Sunday morning due to a dispute among incarcerated leaders that are apart of the gang "The Wolves." 19 people were killed due to violence, 1 was killed due to a chemical substance being ingested; 11 other people were injured. The Ecuador prison has been in a state of emergency since September 2021, 118 people were killed during clashes. More then 300 inmates were killed due to violence in the prison in 2021. Ecuador is a key point on a route that brings Cocaine from South America to the United States and Asia. This also makes it a gang ground. The prison is severely overpopulated, in July 2021; there was over 9,000 inmates when the space only holds up to 5,000. They ended up releasing thousands of people to free up space, these people included: Women, Elderly, Anyone with a disability or terminal illness.
