This past week, the city of Shanghai China reported 20,398 new infections as of Friday, April 9th. The entire population of 26 million people are now on lockdown with a growing discontent as frustrated cries of help circulate the city with resident unable to access food, medicines, and other essentials. Authorities are determined to stick with the zero-Covid policy to eliminate the disease, with at least 38,000 medical personnel being deployed along with 2,000 military personnel. Even medical volunteers are finding themselves struggling to access food, with one volunteer asking "why are the goods and supplies not assigned to us?"
Shanghai residents have taken to going to their balconies to sing and protest lack of supplies. A video is circulation on Weibo showing a drone flying across the sky warning people protesting on their balconies to stay indoors. Translation "Please comply with covid restrictions. Control your soul's desire for freedom. Do not open the window or sing."
Rights observers have expressed increasing concern with reports that some elderly have died during the lockdown after not being able to access vital medication, while others are left starving.
