"Iran claims missile barrage near US consulate in Iraq"
As retribution for an Israeli attack in Syria that killed two members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard earlier this week, the Islamic Republic claimed responsibility for a missile barrage that slammed near a huge US consulate complex in northern Iraq on Sunday. Iraq's Foreign Ministry summoned Iran's envoy on Sunday to express its displeasure with the incident, which it described as a gross breach of the country's sovereignty. Sunday's strike on Irbil, which represented a dramatic escalation between the United States and Iran, resulted in no casualties. Iraq, which is aligned with both nations, has seen a lot of animosity between the two countries in the past. According to the Iraqi government, the strike was a "violation of international law and standards," and the Iranian leadership was summoned to provide an explanation for their actions. According to the Associated Press, Iraq's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmad al-Sahhaf said the ministry summoned Iran's ambassador, Iraj Masjedi, to present the diplomatic complaint.
