New White House Drug Czar Calls for End to "War on Drugs"

Justin Lynch

The new Obama-appointed drug czar Gil Kerlikowskie has promised to treat drugs more as a matter of public health rather than just criminal justice. His quote: "Regardless of how you try to explain to people it's a 'war on drugs' or a 'war on a product,' people see a war as a war on them. We're not at war with people in this country," seems to be more in line with new public opinion and reality. Kerlikowskie has been on the frontlines of the struggle with drugs, starting out in St. Petersburg, FL in the '70's, and an experience of seeing a father blow marijuana smoke into his toddler's face shaped his view that a strict enforcement policy will not stamp out drugs. Other ridiculous actions, like raiding medical marijuana labs in the 13 states that have approved medical marijuana, will also be halted.
