America saving lives in Uganda

As this 60 Minutes piece shows, America is saving lives a world away. President Bush started a program that sends aid to African countries (Uganda is profiled in the story) that pays for drugs that attack HIV and AIDS. As a result, having HIV-AIDS is no longer a death sentence. The story also details some fascinating cultural differences: polygamy is common, fidelity in marriage is rare, and "sugar daddies"-rich older men that can sleep with younger women- are a part of society. With an ABC campaign-Abstinence, Being faithful, Condoms-Uganda is trying to combat the disease and the problem that the American aid brings, that HIV-AIDS is no longer a death sentence. This really cuts through the jumble of foreign politics and gets to the positive effects that result through international relations.
