France recently banned domestic flights along three routes in which brief travel by train or bus is seen as a more environmentally friendly option. This was a major step taken in the direction of reducing carbon emissions by airplanes. However, airline industry groups in Europe argue that the ban infringes upon the EU's freedom of movement and is ineffective in reducing carbon emissions. They plan to carry-out an informal legal battle with the French government to counter the restrictions. On the other side of things, environmental activists argue that the restrictions are too limited.
