12 More Years For Russia's Putin?

Grant Swanson

According to this interview with a Russian correspondent, the term limit for the Russian Presidency has been raised to six years. This new increased term limit was proposed by the current Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. His decision has raised many concerns around the world because he has recently announced his decision to step down as President after only six months. Many believe this is a power play to get Putin back into power for twelve more years in 2012. This is the widely accepted rational behind the change. But the Russian people are for the most part not unhappy. Although their Country is in an awful recesion, their Prime Minister has been able to retrun national pride to Russia. This is something that was squashed in the 1990's. Now, even amidst complete depression and corruption, Putin has been able to instill Russian pride once again. Many wonder if Medvedev was nearly a pawn of Putin, used to be in power during the roughest times of Russia so that it would not mar Putin's bad name. But the question is why Putin would want to come back to power now when things are still looking very bleak. The world does not support Russia after their attack on Georgia. What will Putin do next? Whatever he does do...he may have twelve more years to do it!
