CIA: Too Good at Keeping Secrets?
From Becky Bonarek: The C.I.A. is supposed to be good at keeping secrets, but not from its own government. An internal investigation revealed that the Central Intelligence Agency withheld vital information from Congress, the Justice Department, and even the White House about a Peruvian plane crash in 2001. The C.I.A., in conjunction with the Peruvian Air Force, shot down a plane that they said didn't respond to a call to land for inspection for possession of narcotics. Inside the plane was an American missionary family, two of whom died: the mother and her seven-month-old child. They also said it was an isolated incident, one mistake in a program that works flawlessly-- in fact, the report found the C.I.A. responsible for 10 other planes downed in a similar manner. The Justice Department is currently investigating whether withholding this information is tanamount to obstruction of justice, something the United States' War on Drugs does not need right now.
