Iran minister impeached over faked degree

Stephanie Gesselle

Iranian parliament voted on Tuesday to impeach interior minister Minister Ali Kordan. The impeachment stemmed from findings that the Iranian minister had falsely listed a doctorate degree on his resume. The impeachment created plenty of political controversy. According to several analysts, this impeachment may be an attempt to sabotage credibility of the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Kordan claims that this impeachment is an Israeli strategy to discredit him. Kordan also claims that he had no knowledge that that his Ph. D. from England's Oxford University was not real. He also said someone duped him by saying he could earn the degree by writing an article. Ahmadinejad has promoted Kordon's position as interior minister since August. He is supporting him through the impeachment, insisting that it was done illegally and that the minister’s educational credentials should be of no concern to the people. He has positively acknowledged the minister’s work and experience.

Ahmadinejad's representative was recently banned from parliament. This came as a result of allegations that he had attempted to bribe members to forge signatures on a petitions that states they must withdraw their support for this impeachment. After the allegations, Ahmadinejad fired his representative. Many have said that Ahmadinejad’s opponents were using this impeachment to create instability in his administration, preceding the June election. Ahmadinejad's term is up next year, but he is expected to seek another four years in office in the June election.
