World Welcomes Obama

from Guajardo: With the eyes of the world watching America's intense Presidential election, there was much rejoicing and hesitancy at the announcement of Obama as the next American President. It seems his victory resonates another part of the American dream that the world and those on the homeland have been waiting to see. In today's world where globalization is occurring, many countries feel that unity and open-mindedness are crucial and Obama seems to embody those qualities.

Kenya and Indonesia, countries Obama has visited and lived, were filled with celebrations at his election to Presidency. These countries have the utmost respect for our new President and support him 100%. Sentiments in France stem from jealousy at this election. There, a black candidate once ran for office yet didn't get elected, and Obama's victory symbolizes hope for their future that minorities can hold positions of power.

In Asia, many people feel Obama will have a broader understanding of the world. However, both China and India feel Obama will have different and staunch trade policies. Economists in India feel wearisome that Obama will discourage outsourcing. Those in China are less confident Obama and his administration can do anything to relieve the global crisis, yet they believe Obama recognizes that both countries need each other right now.

In Jerusalem, people feel that whatever changes Obama has to offer will not be revolutionary to their state. A newspaper in Israel sees Obama's victory signifying unity among all races and religions and that he will maintain the United State's status as a superpower.

Russian President Medvedev's first speech since his election conveyed no warm welcome to Obama and instead called his victory "selfish" and included a number of threats to the United States. All things considered, most of Europe is satisfied with the the prospect of having Obama as the next leader of America.
