US halts aid amid Colombia scandal

Thomas Andre: United States aid to Colombia has come to a halt for three of their army units, due to military personnel being implicated in the murder of 11 civilians. Some of the armies' officers and enlisted did this so that they could show themselves as doing something to stop the rebels and get promotions. According to human rights groups, this is just the tip of the iceberg. There has been more than five-hundred people missing and presumed to have had the same fate as the aforementioned victims.

Alvaro Uribe, Colombia's president, has fired over two dozen officers, which included three generals, which shows just how high up this really went in the military. This could not have come at a worse time for the Colombian government because the Obama administration will want justification that the $600 million being sent to Colombia every year is a good investment. Just because they got aide from Bush, does not mean they will continue to get it from Obama.
