Obama Renews the American Dream

From Brianna Howell
This picture says it all. Barack Obama's victory in the Presidential Election has restored the idea of the American Dream around the world. Thousands of people around the world sat around and watched as the results were anounced. The New York Times website features a slide show capturing the emotions of people world wide. The slide show documents the interest and enthusiasm of everyone: High school students in New Delhi, Palestinians, the President of Afghanistan, Kuwati investors, the French, Canadians, Filipinos, the Chinese the Japanese, Kenya, and many more. Barack Obama has sparked the interest of people in relatively every part of the world.

I find it interesting that so many other countries are following the US elections so intently. I know that it is not common for Americans to watch the elections of other countries unfold. This portrays the US as a role model; a source of hope for countries all around the world.

My favorite quotation from the NY Times article is that of Tristram Hunt, a British Historian. He states, Mr. Obama “brings the narrative that everyone wants to return to — that America is the land of extraordinary opportunity and possibility, where miracles happen.” If the rest of the world has this much faith in Obama, I feel the US needs to as well.
