Violence Over Voting/Kashmir

Katie Crawford
On November 17, Indian police officers had to fight off Muslim separatist groups while people tried to get to polling places. The Indian controlled Kashmir is set to be voting for a new government for the upcoming New Year that will set restrictions on roads and improve water supply. The only problem is that the separatist groups do not like that very much. Kashmir is a divided state between Pakistan and India, even though it is Indian controlled. Police officers had to fight off these separatist groups with batons leaving some fatally wounded. The reason for these protests that end so violently is the fear of a stronger Indian government controlling a Muslim majority state. These protests have long been going on for eighteen years and have resulted in at least 43,000 people dead. Despite all of the violence there were long voting lines all day. It seemed intriguing to me that even in a bloody mess that people are willing to vote with the rights that they have been given. I thought that despite violence at the polls this was a good message to all people that if you are given the opportunity to vote, vote.
