Cease Fire.... just kidding

From Brianna Howell:

Despite recent agreements to stop the fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo between the rebels and the government, fighting broke out once again. This happened only one day after the Rebel leader, Laurent Nkunda, had agreed with the UN to cease-fire. The government troops were forced to evacuate their town in the Northeast Congo because of the clashes of the rebels. The Congolese are fleeing to the UN building in Congo for protection. They are not allowed inside the building, but they still feel safer there than in their homes. The UN estimates that an additional 250,000 people are displaced in addtion to the already displaced 800,000 in the area. CNN describes the root of the war: "Nkunda, a Tutsi, has repeatedly blamed the Congolese government for failing to protect Tutsis from attacks by Rwandan Hutus who fled over the border following the 1994 genocide that left hundreds of thousands of Tutsis dead.".... The irrationality by the rebels is so frustrating. Basically from the studying we have done on Africa and it's rebel war/child soldiers I have concluded that their theory is essentially 'two wrongs make a right'. Nkunda is basically fighting for revenge... I don't remember the exact quote from A Long Way Gone, but Ishmael says towards the end that he learned that revenge is never good. Until the rest of the Continent realizes this, I do not believe there is an end in sight for the rebel wars.
