The Bin Ladins go to Spain

Twenty-seven year old Omar Osama bin Ladin, the son of the notorious Osama bin Ladin, arrived in Madrid’s Barajas International Airport on Monday. He was seeking asylum, and according to Spanish law, the government has 72 hours to decide whether or not he can stay in Spain. It is unclear upon what grounds Omar Osama bin Ladin is pleading for asylum.

Last January, Omar Osama bin Ladin expressed to CNN the difficulty he faces as a bin Ladin. As one of the 19 children fathered by Osama bin Ladin (the fourth oldest male), he related that while he his proud of his name, everywhere he goes, people are afraid of him.

If Omar bin Ladin is accepted into Spain, it will be interesting to hear of the public reaction in many different areas.

Firstly in Madrid, due to the Madrid train bombings. Whether or not the public will be receptive of the government's decision to allow Omar bin Ladin to have asylum in Spain is an interesting question to think about.

Britons have also especially been concerned about Al-Queda, and understandably so. The London Transit System Bombings of July 2005, killing 52 people is just one of the attacks that has instilled fear of terrorists globally. Because of London's close geographical relationship to Spain, some political strain could be the result of the allowance of Omar bin Ladin's asylum request.
