Ghada El Tawil holds true to her tradition

Amanda Dominguez

Ghada El Tawil has been absence from channel 5 news in Alexandria, Egypt for the past six years. What has she been doing? Fighting a legal battle so that she may have the right to express her long standing tradition of wearing her hijab on screen. Ghada struggled for a long time with the idea of wearing her hijab. When she decided in 2002 that she wanted to take part in this tradition, it was then that she was refused her on screen appearance. It was 2005 that the court ruled in her favor. She says that she does not understand why the management did not allow it to begin with. Either way, it is still interesting to hear of women wanting to wear the traditional head scarf. Some of the world sees it as a form of discrimination against women. None the less, it just goes to show that there are different sides to every story and that tradition is not always a bad thing.
