Egyptian farmers protest pig slaughter

By Jenny Elgin

Egyptian farmers are pretty upset with authorities who are killing their pigs. On Sunday, 50 to 60 protesters threw rocks at police officers as health workers took the farmers pigs to be killed.

This is all being done to prevent the spread of swine flu, but farmers are not pleased with the government taking away such a valued source of income. Besides eating the pork, most farmers also work in the farm industry & use their daily garbage collections to feed their herds.

The government is compensating the farmers by paying for each killed pig, whether diseased or not. The government is also freezing the disease-free pork to give back to the farmers once the ban is lifted.
