Islamic militants seize Somali city

By Jenny Elgin

A Somalian Islamic group, Al-Shabab, recently took control of Jowhar after fighting with pro-government groups.

Townspeople have been fleeing the city since the group took control on Sunday. The group has begun searching police stations and government offices and have spread the fighting to the suburbs of the city. The group has recently stated that they have successfully recruited more members.

A spokesman has said that the root of this takeover lies in the interpretation of Islamic law in the country - Al-Shabab disagrees with the president's recent approval of the law and wants to country to implement a stricter code.
