In a war that fell behind importance during the second Bush term but was promised more attention by candidate Obama, President Obama indeed made news by firing the American in charge of forces in Afghanistan. The move was actually applauded by the leading conservative magazine The Weekly Standard, saying it was "the kind of change that even The Weekly Standard can believe in," and the more liberal Slate said it was a "big deal", since it's a war Obama has put his personal stamp on. This is the kind of leadership needed right now: if a commander isn't doing a good job, get 'em out.
