Security Council to Focus on African Hotspots

By: Dan Dierdorff
From ABC World News there are reports that the UN Security Council, a body in which the US is a permanent member of, will turn its focus on Africa. There goal is to meet with the African Union and the leaders of such countries like the Congo, Somolia, Rwanda, and Liberia. This is quite a big deal because it is about time that a body that promotes peace if focusing on a continent that is, in certain places, tearing itself apart by war and genocide. One place they are not visiting is the Sudan because they feel it wouldn't be right to meet with a leader who is charged with war crimes. I hope that this will open the eyes of the UN and the Security Council that intervention is needed to help these countries live in peace and maybe even start to develop into prosperous nations in the future. Obviously this trip is mostly for diplomatic talks about what the AU can do but it is still good to see the international community starting to see the issues. It will also be interesting to see how Burkina Faso and Uganda will react to this trip because they both are on the rotational non-permanent members of the UNSC. Hopefully for Africa the UNSC will start talks on peace keeping missions in the forementioned countries in peril.
