Pennsylvanian Senator Arlen Specter, who has recently left the Republican party to join the Democrats, has stated that he will not be a loyal Democrat. He is still against two important liberal bills, including the Employee Free Choice Act and public health insurance. The Employee Free Choice Act would make unionization easier; all the Democrats are for it and all the Republicans are against it, so Specter is a deciding vote. The bill will likely not past if he chooses to support a filibuster. Specter is also against public health insurance, which would lower the costs of health insurance and make it available to all, but which Republicans see as a threat to the free market. Just because the Democrats have gained a Senator doesn't mean they will be able to pass their bills. I'm also wondering if Specter will be elected in the Democratic primary if he is against public health insurance and the Employee Free Choice Act.
