On May 12, 2008, federal immigration officials arrested 389 illegal workers at a kosher meatpacking plant in Postville, Iowa. Since then, the plant's company has gone into bankruptcy, the town's population has shrunk by half, and the suppliers and sellers of meat have felt the pinch. This situation underscores the need for immigration reform to get towns that have few business and rely on immigrant labor out of regulatory limbo with a guest-worker program.
