Can Chinese Car Firms Save Detroit?

By Emily Canaday

America's Motor City could find industry in producing and research once more- just not under American auspices. Chinese car companies, strong markets in Latin America, are apparently intent on producing cars for the US market by 2015. While vague, even speculation on impinging Chinese producers highlights that America, traditionally a seat of exports, is now shifting into an import/consumer "back seat"- with subsequent effects on foreign policy. Foreign companies setting up camp on our side of the globe opens the door for economic connections to be forged, as well as the possible delivery of a rising economic power investing tech and manpower in one of America's most needy cities- which means that relations with China, at least where pocketbooks are concerned, have a vested interest in staying friendly. Who knows- China could become the next Japan, moving up from electronics and creepy kid's movies about flying squashes, to vehicles.
