Putin grants interview about upcomingOlympic games

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, who rarely grants interviews with foreign reporters, talked with BBC reporter Andrew Marr about the upcoming Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. The main focus of the beginning this interview was the games and gay rights. What much of the main stream media has failed to mention the laws that ban homosexual propaganda in Russia aimed towards minors. Not homosexual relations. Many critics of the law state that the loosely written law can be interoperated in a way that makes any homosexual behavior illegal. Many countries leaders have stated that they will not be in attendance at these games and the United States is sending an openly gay Olympic delegation. However the question has been raised if the Olympics are the time and the place to criticize Russia’s law. The second part of this interview addressed the recent attacks in Russia that occurred near Sochi and threats against the games. Putin stated that security measures have been taken that will ensure the protection of the athletes and those in attendance. At the end of the interview Putin stated that since the collapse of the USSR Russia’s morale has been low and he hopes that these games will play a role in lifting the spirits of his countrymen.
