Instead of reading an online article this week, I watched an interesting video from TED that relates to some of the issues we talk about during class. First, Thomas Barnett works at the Pentagon and is a military strategist. The overall theme of this talk discusses how the United States military needs to create a new outline for occupying another country with military personnel. Barnett argues that there should be three phases for occupying another country. The first phase includes having the proper facts and knowledge about the country, the second phase includes the physical force itself, and the third phase deals with the re-building of that country. Barnett feels that the United States completes phases 1 and 2 flawlessly, but phase 3 is a failure. Phase 3 involves the United States military staying stationed in the country until order is re-established. Barnett feels that in Iraq, we came in, killed everyone, and left people to fend for themselves. I feel that this model is good in theory, but every circumstance is different, and uncontrollable variables might not fit into this purposed plan.
